I love Herman's Hermits' version of this song, but in fairness, Skeeter Davis' original is still the best recording of the song. For a song where the Hermits DID do a better recording than the original artists, check out "Silhouettes." As done by The Rays, it's a minor Doo-Wop number, but Noone & Co. inject some real life into it, and, unlike so many Hermits' numbers on which Jimmy Page is alleged to have contributed his guitar work, he actually did play the solos on that one!

But you're right, for a time in '65, the Hermits were second only to The Beatles, with The Dave Clark Five coming on strong. Of course, the following year would see The Monkees eclipse both the Hermits and the DC5. The Rolling Stones, though a better band than all these pop groups (except The Beatles, perhaps), hadn't really caught on commercially until the release of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" later in the year. But it was a great time for rock & roll, for sure!

Right on--and really Noone was just 16 years old when he started with the Hermits in 1963. So when kids today talk about "boy bands" like N'Sync, Backstreet Boys, etc., Herman's Hermits was fronted by a singer who really was a boy in a real band that actually played instruments. I think the better term to apply to these so-called "boy bands" would be "boy groups" anyway. "Band" implies instruments played by the group members.

Al Hirt is an incredible trumpet player. You can look him up on here, as a matter of fact. I recommend his song "Cotton Candy"...Go try it, expand your horizons...it is very sweet! Ha!

I hate to be the wet blanket here, but this is a terrible version of this song. It's full of wrong chords, and really bad sounding ones at that...And what the hell happened at 1:30? Instead of singing the word "can't," he appears to be having some sort of seizure.
