i don't think it's importance lies in the characters being male its about the natural world and the industrialised about the real and the unreal and of course bout a parent and a child but if they r male or not... schuberts would i suppose like this interpretation more than most others cause she is not like Fischer-Diskau making it into a piece of 2Unterhaltungsmusik" which schubert came over in his own sarcastic manner...

Somehow this works better when a male sings it. I am not trying to be sexist in anyway, but somehow this song needs a rumbling, deep voice. I think that first of all the story is about a father and a son. Fischer-Dieskau is a phenomenal singer for this particular piece. However, Anne Sofie is a marvelous singer! She has lots of power and her facial expressions are magnificent! However I believe this is more of a guy piece, but of course this is coming from a purist... :)
